چکیده

Measurement of high-power proton beam-halo formation is the ongoing scientific experiment for the Low Energy Demonstration Accelerator (LEDA) facility. To attain this measurement goal, a 52-magnet beam line containing several types of beam diagnostic instrumentation is being installed. The Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS) and commercial software applications are presently being integrated to provide a real-time, synchronous data acquisition and control system. This system is comprised of magnet control, vacuum control, motor control, data acquisition, and data analysis. Unique requirements led to the development and integration of customized software and hardware. EPICS real-time databases, Interactive Data Language (IDL) programs, LabVIEW Virtual Instruments (VI), and State Notation Language (SNL) sequences are hosted on VXI, PC, and UNIX-based platforms which interact using the EPICS Channel Access (CA) communication protocol. Acquisition and control hardware technology ranges from DSP-based diagnostic instrumentation to the PLCcontrolled vacuum system. This paper describes the control system hardware and software design, and implementation.

The Beam Halo Experiment at LEDA

Due to the potentially adverse effects of the generation of halo particles in intense proton beams, it is imperative to have a clear understanding of the mechanisms that can lead to halo formation for current and proposed high-intensity linacs. To this end a theoretical model has been developed, which indicates that protons under the combined influence of strong space charge forces and periodic...

Measurements of Halo Generation for a Proton Beam in a Fodo Channel*

An experimental effort has been undertaken to investigate the production of halo particles in a proton beam having significant space charge forces. The LEDA RFQ was used to inject a pulsed 6.7 MeV 1575 mA beam into a linear FODO channel. Four matching quads at the input of this 52-quadrupole transport line were used to generate specific mismatch oscillations, believed to be a key mechanism in t...

Low Energy Demonstration Accelerator (leda) Beam Instrumentation: Rfq-accelerated Beam Results

Beam diagnostic instrumentation is being developed for the LEDA, a 6.7-MeV, 100-mA-cw proton accelerator, presently being commissioned at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). This instrumentation will be the basis for much of the Accelerator Production of Tritium and the Spallation Neutron Source linac. Located in the LEDA injector and the high energy beam transport (HEBT) this initial in...

High Power Operations of Leda*

The LEDA RFQ, a 350-MHz continuous wave (CW) radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ), successfully accelerated a 100-mA CW proton beam from 75 keV to 6.7 MeV. We have accumulated 111 hr of beam on time with at least 90 mA of CW output beam current. The 8-mlong RFQ accelerates a dc, 75–keV, ~106-mA H beam from the LEDA injector with ~94% transmission. When operating the RFQ at the RF power level for wh...
